One line
Dr. Srinivasa K. Rao, Ph.D., is a biomedical scientist turned “food as medicine” educator, and the creator of Path to Nobel, a programme that turns students into published co-authors.
Short — approx. 90 words
Dr. Srinivasa K. Rao spent four decades in molecular science — a Ph.D. from the University of Paris V, research at Columbia and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, 40 peer-reviewed papers and three U.S. patents — before turning to a simpler question: can everyday food prevent disease? He made quinoa affordable in India, built a database of more than a thousand edible plants, and has led a weekly nutrition education series continuously since 2020. Through Path to Nobel, he mentors school students into becoming published co-authors.
Full biography
Dr. Srinivasa Kalasapudi Rao is a biomedical scientist, nutrition innovator and educator based in New York. He earned his Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the University of Paris V in 1988 as a French Government Scholar, receiving a Very Honorable Mention for his thesis, after early research as a Junior Research Fellow at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad.
He was invited to the United States by Charles Cantor and spent 1988–1993 in molecular genetics at Columbia University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. From 1993 to 2002 he served as a senior research scientist at Albert Einstein and LIJ Medical Center, leading teams working on serine proteases, matrix-degrading enzymes and the pathobiology of aortic aneurysm, and taught cell, molecular and developmental biology as faculty at CUNY. From 2002 to 2007 he evaluated vaccine science at Shantha Biotech. He has published 40 peer-reviewed papers and holds three U.S. patents.
In 2009 he founded North East Biotech Inc. (Food123), turning nutrition science into affordable food. He made quinoa affordable in India by partnering with farmers in India and Bolivia, developed a plant-derived low-sodium Green Salt and freeze-dried fruit lines, and built “Poshak,” a database of more than 1,000 edible plants for diverse, climate-resilient diets.
Since 2020 he has convened and led a weekly nutrition education series — more than 180 sessions and still running — presenting regularly himself and curating invited experts across medicine, dietetics, Ayurveda, food science and computational research. He is the author and editor of a shelf of books, including 100 Food Rules for Health & Longevity and Food as Medicine: 108 Pioneers.
He is Founder and President of the Association for Human Development, Inc., a U.S. 501(c)(3), through which he runs Path to Nobel — a publishing programme in which school students become published co-authors chronicling Nobel laureates. Every cover carries a mirror, so a student opening a book about Nobel winners sees their own face.
